Climate change is a reality. For this reason, we strive to produce in an increasingly sustainable way, increasing the efficiency of our operations and reducing our environmental impact.

The revitalization of mature fields is an essential part of this strategy, allowing to extract more value from existing assets with less impact.

Protecting biodiversity

We are increasingly committed to actively preserving nature and biodiversity. To this end, we have developed conditioning projects to obtain production and drilling licenses, which help mitigate impacts on the environment and the communities around us.

Short term 0-1 year

  • Identify climate-related risks and opportunities.
  • Implement operational synergies which, through efficiency gains, are capable of reducing the emissions associated with production.

Medium term 1-3 years

  • Estimate an internal carbon price and study how it relates to a possible portfolio of projects capable of mitigating emissions.

Long term 3-10 years

  • Evaluate and implement, where applicable, measures to mitigate climate risks and adaptation costs, considering recognized climate scenarios and, particularly, research opportunities in carbon capture and other effective techniques against emissions.

Environmental Monitoring Project — PMA

It monitors the current state of the environment in a given area or region, and is very important in licensing. In production and drilling activities, it assesses the impacts of potential changes in the marine ecosystem (particularly on the seabed) resulting from the activity throughout the lifetime of the fields.

Project for Monitoring the Impact of Platforms and Vessels on Birdlife — PMAVE

This project provides guidance on how to record sightings of debilitated or injured birds, as well as agglomerations of birds in the structures of maritime units. It also describes the procedures for capturing, collecting, transporting or handling birds, ensuring the welfare of the animals and the safety of the team and the operation.

Exotic Species Prevention and Control Project – PPCEX

The aim is to present the strategies and respective methodologies for actions to prevent the introduction and early detection of fouling alien species, with an emphasis on the sun coral.

Fauna Protection Plan — PPAF

It covers response actions in the event of accidents involving oil spills at sea, in the event of wildlife being affected, together with maritime operations at the assets.

Marine Biota Monitoring Project — PMBM

The aim is to monitor the occurrence of marine fauna (turtles, birds, marine mammals and fish) and the attractive effect that Maritime Units may have on them.

Pollution Control Project — PCP

The project aims to control the pollution generated by production activities in the fields. All sources of pollution are controlled and monitored in accordance with Brazilian and international legislation. Therefore, all waste generated is separated and transported to the mainland for proper disposal.

Aircraft Traffic Monitoring Project — PMTA

The aim of the PMTA is to understand the dynamics of the aircraft that meet the logistics needs involved in the operational activities of the projects located in the Campos Basin, identifying the impact of this activity on the logistics spaces in these municipalities.

Macro Plan to foster integrated action in the sector

The Macro Plan is Ibama’s proposal to optimize efforts and improve results in the management of socio-environmental impacts from the production and flow of oil and gas in the Santos, Campos and Espírito Santo Basins. This plan articulates the programs in an integrated manner, allowing oil-producing companies operating in the same region to carry out socio-environmental projects in a shared manner.

Vessel Traffic Monitoring Project — PMTE

The objective of the PMTE is to understand the dynamics of the support vessels that meet the logistics needs involved in the operational activities of PRIO’s production projects located in the Campos Basin.

Project to Monitor the Transportation and Disposal of Inputs and Waste — PMIR

The aim of the project is to monitor the spatial distribution of the network of input suppliers and waste disposal service providers, as well as the spatial distribution and use of logistics infrastructures for moving this material to serve the offshore activities of the oil and gas industry in the Campos Basin.

Workers Socio-Spatial Monitoring Project — PMST

With the aim of monitoring occupational changes, understanding the socio-economic profile and the dynamics of displacement of workers directly associated with oil and natural gas activities, as well as their directly associated socio-environmental impacts, the PMST carries out an annual survey. This data, collected annually by each company, is analyzed in an integrated manner with the results of all the companies that are part of the Macro Plan.

We have built a relationship of trust, transparency and dialog with the communities in our area of influence. Among the pillars of this connection are the Social Communication Project (SCP), the Environmental Education Project (EEP) and the Workers’ Environmental Education Project (EEPW), which reinforce our commitment to dialog and transparency with local communities and our employees.

EEP Observation Network: participation and social transformation

The Environmental Education Project (EEP) fosters the engagement of communities in public environmental management and monitors socio-environmental impacts in 11 municipalities in the Campos Basin. The initiative already directly involves 180 people, focusing on social groups in vulnerable situations, such as: fishermen, quilombolas and family farmers.

In 2024, as a social investment, we launched the School Acceleration Program, with tutoring in Portuguese, mathematics and socio-emotional skills for young people and adults from the Observation Network project, expanding development opportunities in the communities.

PEA Foco: community strengthening and female leadership

PEA Foco promotes the creation and strengthening of community organization across nine fishing communities in the cities of São João da Barra and São Francisco de Itabapoana, with focus on women who work directly or indirectly in the artisanal fishing value chain.

The project aims to foster women’s empowerment and recognition of their role and contributions across the region’s economic, social and environmental spheres, while respecting the interdependent relationships that are intrinsic to community life.

SCP – Social Communication Project

This project informs the fishing community about oil and gas production and drilling activities in PRIO’s fields, what the social and environmental impacts are, the projects that are carried out as license conditions and the direct communication channels that society in general has with PRIO.

EEPW – Environmental Education Project for Workers

The aim of this project is to develop a critical view of the impacts generated by oil and gas drilling and production activities among the workers involved in PRIO’s activities.

TAC Frade:
direct impact on those who
need it most

In 2019, when we took over the Frade Field, we also made a commitment to the future: the Conduct Adjustment Term (TAC), in the amount of R$ 95 million, aimed at positively transforming the coastal region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. More than an investment, the objectives of TAC Frade’s cover social and environmental development, with a focus on conserving marine biodiversity, strengthening artisanal fishing and environmental education.

Through our own methodology, we decentralize investments and make it possible for grassroots institutions linked in some way to artisanal fishing to access TAC resources. In total, over 100 projects have been supported in recent years.

The TAC Frade has four major projects for the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems, which are presented below:

Porpoise Conservation Project

Porpoises, small mammals of the dolphin family, are threatened with extinction according to the IUCN Red List and the National List of Threatened Brazilian Fauna Species.

The species faces risks such as water pollution, plastic ingestion, a reduction in available food and accidental capture in fishing nets. The project aims to protect these animals and contribute to the conservation of marine biodiversity.

Marine and Fishing Research

The project encourages the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge to strengthen the adoption of sustainable practices in extractive fishing. In 2024, around US$ 847,000 was invested in the initiative and its complementary sub-projects, which directly contribute to the preservation of the marine environment and the development of fishing on the Rio de Janeiro coast.

Support for Conservation Units (UCS)

With 18% of the Brazilian population living in the coastal zone, where 70% of the country’s economic activity is concentrated, PRIO is supporting the structuring of eleven coastal Protected Areas (PAs). The actions include drawing up management plans, training technical teams, strengthening fishing communities, signposting and structuring visitation areas, as well as monitoring and inspection to ensure the conservation of biodiversity.

Environmental Education

Our program fosters actions that strengthen communities, encourage environmental education and stimulate income generation, resulting in an improvement in local socio-environmental quality. We believe that deep changes happen through individual and collective transformation, promoting sustainable and lasting development.
