On the 13th, the Mar Atento Project will start its training program in Barra do Furado (Quissamã, RJ). The action aims to train fishermen from the region, which also includes Farol de São Thomé (Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ), to respond effectively to environmental emergencies such as oil spills at sea, helping to protect the region’s marine and coastal ecosystems.

The training will be broken down into theoretical and hands-on modules, with 60 fishermen participating in activities involving safety procedures and oil containment techniques, as well as handling oiled animals. The practical classes will include the use of containment booms and beach cleaning equipment, with boats already registered to support the operations. All participants will receive certificates, teaching materials and personal protective equipment (PPE). At the end of the project, the fishermen will be able to act efficiently in environmental emergencies, with their boats officially registered to contribute to oil spill response operations.

“Preparing local fishermen to respond to environmental emergencies is an essential step in mitigating impacts and ensuring a fast and effective answer in critical situations. We see great importance in working on this project alongside companies in the industry that are also committed to sustainability and preserving the environment. This is the type of action that not only strengthens our ability to protect the marine ecosystem, but also helps us valuing the local community, fostering a safer and more responsible environment,” says Leandro Brandão, PRIO’s Sustainability Manager.

The Mar Atento project is an initiative of Shell and Equinor in partnership with Vast Infraestrutura and PRIO, and focuses on the safety and environmental protection of coastal communities.
